Theta Theta History

Making A Statement At Winthrop University  Since 1977

On March 22, 1977, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. granted a charter to thirteen young ladies at Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina. These young ladies – Janet Rose Adams, Deborah Dianne Brown, Deborah Jo Davis, Gwendolyn Marene Crome, Miriam Yvonne Crome, Deborah Deneece Jones, Gloria Alfreda Golightly, Brenda Lorraine Norwood, Sateria Laverne Padgett, Carol Theresa Owens, Myrna Janis Simmons, Cheryl Ann Samuel, and Jovada Lynn Sims – had worked hard to convince the school officials and the National body that they could and would work hard to carry out the ideals of Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood on the campus.

These young ladies were chartered in an official ceremony on April 2, 2977 in the McBryde Hall on Winthrop campus. The chartering of Theta Theta Chapter, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was significant in Greekdom in the Rock Hill area. It was the third National Organization admitted on the Winthrop College campus and the FIRST predominately Black Greek Lettered Organization on the campus. The Theta Theta Chapter was the seventh undergraduate chapter in the state of South Carolina.
